T his is a custom 12" figure commemorating a real American pioneer in investigative journalism, Elizabeth Cochran Seaman (born Elizabeth Jane Cochran May 5th, 1864- January 22nd 1922) better known by her pen name, Nellie Bly. Nellie Bly is probably best remembered for for her fantastic trip around the world in 72 days. She was inspired by Jules Verne's classic story "Around the World in 80 Days" with hero Phileas Fogg. She convinced her editor at the New York World newspaper that it would be a great story opportunity. About a year later, on two days notice, Nellie headed out. She had a sturdy dress, a large overcoat, several changes of underwear, different types of money and toiletries for her trip. Nellie was on her famous journey when a competitor (for the Cosmopolitain) boasted that she could head the opposite way round the world and complete the trip quicker. When Nellie was made aware of this other trip (around her entering Hong Kong) she replied, "I would not race, if someone else wants to do the trip in less time, that is their concern". Nellie was also well known for her undercover work at a mental institution. She spent ten days there as a "mental patient". Nellie would later publish her report in book form, "Ten Days in a Mad-House" which brought about changes in the mental institutions. She also gained everlasting fame from this work. Nellie was an amazing person and one of the most colorful figures in American history. This figure was designed mainly for display purposes for the history fan. While the figure does not look exactly like Nellie Bly, there is a nice resemblance. This figure would make a nice addition to any collection.stand included. sold as is. Thank you for the look, enjoy shopping! Please note the following -when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thanks for the look, have fun shopping!
